3rd. INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON GAMMA TiAl TECHNOLOGIES
BAMBERG (MAY 29-31, 2006)
This year’s hosts of the INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON GAMMA-TiAl TECHNOLOGIES, GfE Metalle und Materialien GmbH, Leistritz Turbomaschinentechnik GmbH and Rolls Royce Germany Ltd., invited international experts in the area of Titanium-Aluminum-Alloys to an exchange of information in Bamberg.
More than 120 representatives of industry and research from 16 different countries used the workshop as a platform for open discussions about the novel structural material Gamma-Titanium-Aluminum. This new material class is characterized by low specific weight, excellent oxidation resistance and retained room temperature physical properties up to a working temperature of about 900°C.
The latest developments in Gamma-TiAl Technology, including current applications in steady state steam and gas turbines and combustion engines, took center stage in the discussions. A lively debate ensued regarding topics such as Wrought Processing, Melting & Casting and Environmental Effects, spotlighting current results of fundamental research.
One goal of the attending experts is to achieve distinct improvements in turbine and combustion engine efficiencies, primarily by using these lighter weight Gamma-TiAl materials in areas requiring high working temperatures. Application of these materials to key components also improves dynamic engine behaviour, lowering specific fuel consumption and toxic emissions.
With 41 oral presentations and 16 posters displaying several specific topics, this year’s workshop surpasses the previous two events in volume and content.
In the course of the workshop, the participants had an opportunity to visit the Gamma-Titanium-Aluminum production facilities within GfE in Nuremberg.
